Video Review: 'The Rapture'

Screenwriter Michael Tolkin (The Player) turned director with this audacious and at times deeply disturbing meditation on the connection between sexual obsession and religious fanaticism. An uncommercial little masterpiece that believably stages the end of the world, the film looks gorgeous in a first-time wide-screen transfer. And the bonus audio tracks — in which Tolkin and cast riff nonstop over the movie on such topics as one another’s body parts — are a genuine if occasionally smutty hoot; Duchovny, in particular, comes off more as a gifted stand-up comic than an actor agonizing over his motivations.
