This week’s box office numbers

Two superstars aren’t necessarily better than one. That’s the lesson Jim Carrey taught Harrison Ford and Brad Pitt as Liar Liar barely slowed its pace despite the debut of The Devil’s Own. With its $14.3 million opening, the Ford-Pitt teaming looks stronger than their recent individual starring vehicles — Pitt’s Sleepers opened to $12.3 million and Ford’s Sabrina bowed to $5.6 million. And Ford plus Pitt outperformed Al Pacino plus Johnny Depp in Donnie Brasco. But neither thriller’s opening surpassed the debut of Clint Eastwood’s Absolute Power. So what would happen if Eastwood and Carrey got together?
