The comedy of manners Cold Comfort Farm, about a posh Londoner named Flora (Beckinsale), whose finances force her to decamp to some loony relatives’ ramshackle farm, makes for diverting TV. With its charming rusticity and Jane Austen-wannabe heroine, the film comes off like a patchwork of recent imports, but this tale of how Flora revamps her quirky kin — convincing reclusive aunt Dora (Eileen Atkins) to get over ”the nasty thing” she saw in the woodshed, for example — has been woven too loosely. Flora is improbably resourceful (she turns a hayseed cousin into a movie star) and too pristine (how does she stay spotless tripping across muddy fields?). And you never learn what that oft-cited woodshed nastiness was, which adds to the story’s threadbare-as-old-drapes feel. C+
