We gave it a C-

Leslie Nielsen should donate his body to MAD magazine when he dies; he’s been its spiritual mascot ever since he said ”Don’t call me Shirley” in 1980’s Airplane! Unfortunately, the secret-agent spoof Spy Hard doesn’t begin to scale the delirious heights of Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker classics like Airplane! and The Naked Gun. Directed and cowritten by Rick Friedberg, Spy Hard is a ZAZ wannabe, but if one’s hopes rise at the opening shot of Nielsen — as Dick Steele, Agent WD-40 — parachuting out of a plane holding a brandy snifter, they’re dashed by a hit-to-miss gag ratio of about 30-70. As the Blofeldian villain, poor old Andy Griffith resembles a laminated woodchuck, and the lists of guest stars (Mr. T, Dr. Joyce Brothers, Fabio) and parodies (Speed, Pulp Fiction, Home Alone) sound funnier than they play.
