Laserdisc Review: 'El Cid'

Posted on

Director Anthony Mann’s sometimes ponderous epic El Cid, about Spain’s greatest medieval hero, is not without its share of inadvertent laughs (check out Sophia Loren’s hats). Still, this letterboxed disc of the film’s recent restoration shows that El Cid remains a visually sumptuous film graced with a passionate score by Miklos Rozsa (here in remixed Dolby Digital). Criterion has also included a generous ”making of” supplement, though it gets off to something of a sour start; El Cid, Heston informs us, would have been a really great movie if only it had been directed by somebody like William Wyler. Not very gracious, Chuck. B+
