Lushly set in the velvet-cloaked, smoke-and-mirrors world of professional magic in turn-of-the-century London, Christopher Priest’s extraordinary novel The Prestige interweaves the bitter rivalry and strange secrets of two magicians. One is renowned for an impossible trick where he seems to be in two places at once; the other is spurred to create a more stunning bilocation act using the new technology of electricity. The story is enormously complex yet like a dazzling magic act itself: a series of perfectly executed illusions that build in suspense and difficulty. And the result (or, in the language of conjurers, the ”prestige”) is a surprise that marvelously satisfies the myriad genres — gothic, thriller, science fiction — that Priest has successfully managed to merge and transform in this eerie fictional sleight of hand.
