We gave it a B-

Based on stories by Paul Bowles, the British shorts of Halfmoon (released theatrically as a triptych) shine intermittently. Though all three share thematic threads of betrayal and vengeance, each charts dramatically different emotional terrain: from the volatile friendship of two young Tangiers men, to the desolate honeymoon cruise of an out-of-love English couple, to the fantastical bonding between an outcast Moroccan boy and a snake charmer’s cobra. While the first and third films are feverishly exotic, they seem like unfinished stories. Only the middle one, ”Call at Corazon,” fully satisfies. A cool, elliptical drama of marital mind games, it belongs not in this collection but on a video double bill with Bernardo Bertolucci’s film of Bowles’ The Sheltering Sky. Rent the two together for a night of poetic despair. B-
