Count on the British to produce Haunted, a ghost story both refined and batty. Attempting to disprove the existence of spirits in a bizarre family of gentry, a university don (Aidan Quinn) pits the supercilious, rational exterior of Englishness against its inbred, eccentric interior. That collision — set amid all the picturesque manors and blooming meadows any Merchant Ivory fan could desire — may not elicit any undignified screams of terror. But the creepy allure of Kate Beckinsale (Cold Comfort Farm) and her onscreen siblings makes this direct-to-video chiller’s view of England appropriately and entertainingly twisted. B+
