It didn’t used to take a naked — pregnant or body-painted — Demi Moore to sell copies of Vanity Fair. While the magazine covers from the first half of this century (all of which were illustrated) can’t match the shock value of contemporary ones, Cover Story: The Art of American Magazine Covers 1900-1950 demonstrates that they were far more whimsical and glamorous. Indeed, Vogue‘s decadent deco Eduardo Benito illustrations of the 1930s and Harper’s Bazaar‘s 1936 ”Travel and Resort” cover by Erte may make you lament the rise of the supermodel more than ever. A-
