A star of the new-to-video Powder, Mary Steenburgen credits video with saving two faves among her own films: 1979’s Time After Time and 1980’s Melvin and Howard, for which she won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar. Here’s what she’s been watching lately.
—South Pacific ”I had the flu. Ted [Danson, her husband] knew I loved South Pacific, so he got it. When I was 7 or 8, I saw [the play], and when it was over, my mother said my eyes were 1,000 watts. I went backstage, and one of the actors said, ‘Look at that kid’s eyes — there’s an actress there.”’
—The Endless Summer 2 ”My son, Charlie, is a surfing freak. He and Ted recently went to the Waterman’s Ball, a fund-raiser where the surfers get all dressed up. And there was Wingnut [who’s featured in this documentary]. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched this movie, but we had to watch it again, because now we know Wingnut.”
