Sudden Death

Posted on

This tale of terrorists taking over the Stanley Cup finals was meant to bring the Belgian kickboxer Jean-Claude Van Damme to Schwarzenegger’s level of stardom. Instead, this fun, fast-paced actioner got lost among last year’s high-powered Christmas releases, so moviegoers missed out on Powers Boothe’s droll villainous turn, plus the chance to see how well director Peter Hyams choreographs Van Damme after they worked together on Timecop. And video serves Sudden Death well, as the small screen practically bulges, leaving this previously modest film looking nearly epic. B+
