Several minutes into this good-natured drama, you may begin to notice some persistent background noise — that’s the monster backhoe coming in to shovel forth the life lessons, and the heft of this obvious meaningfulness (best summed up in bumper-sticker maxims like ”Appreciate what you have” or ”Dare to be yourself”) threatens to crush the Three Wishes‘ two true assets. One is flavorful period re-creation: Korean War-era suburbia, in which a mysterious drifter (Patrick Swayze) finds himself when he is taken in by a fatherless family. The other is several understated actors (including Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and young Joseph Mazzello). Neither was enough to draw audiences to theaters, but they should sufficiently grant the wishes of renters looking for quality family fare. B-
