We gave it a C+

If marriage is such an unassailably worthy institution, why do we need so many movies hell-bent on persuading us that’s the case? (And why do they all use the same tattered cliches to do it?) How to Make an American Quilt is the latest testimonial, which makes a harmless transition to video even though it will join an almost indistinguishable crowd at the store. It offers an embarrassment of casting riches (including Ellen Burstyn and Alfre Woodard) as a quilting bee of tough-talkin’, mature babes who teach indecisive Finn (the adorably fey Winona Ryder) that it’s better to have difficult — sometimes painful — attachments to men than none at all. By the end, however, a movie that was undoubtedly meant to be genuine, homemade, and individualistic looks suspiciously machine-stitched. C+
