Robin Hudson — a sassy young Rita Hayworth look-alike — must make nice to her slimy boss if she wants to keep her job as a third-string reporter at New York’s All News Network. Then, to make matters worse, her male gynecologist is found shot in the heart, a matchbook from a notorious S&M club near his body. Robin is assigned to the story and — when not interviewing dominatrices — realizes that a subsequent series of shootings are tied together by one thread: She has dated all the victims. Though Sparkle Hayter won a major mystery award for her first Robin Hudson novel, the initially promising whodunit Nice Girls Finish Last is solved with a thud. Nevertheless, Hayter (a former CNN journalist and stand-up comic) offers a hilarious, keenly written romp across the gender divide, downtown Manhattan’s alternative scenes, and the frenetic world of TV news.
