'KOMBAT' SCOOTS'

Posted on

IN A TOP 10 BURSTING with action flicks, it’s surprising that a virtual stalemate grips the videocassette rentals chart this week. Die Hard With a Vengeance and Apollo 13 may seem untoppable, but Mortal Kombat has been making steady strides ever since its entry at No. 8 three weeks ago. Behind Kombat’s advance lies an impressive marketing machine, with some retailers bombarding renters with such promo booty as fake tattoos, mini flying discs, key chains, and ”scratch and win” games. However, Showgirls, which earned $20 million at theaters, will have to shake its booty if it hopes to headline on the charts someday; it debuted at a lackluster No. 14. In sales news, Grumpy Old Men leaps 13 spots to enter the top 10 — must be all those Grumpier Old Men fans curious to see what questions went unanswered the first time around.
