THE REAL RICHARD NIXON (1995, Central Park Media, three tapes, unrated, $49.95) Just when you thought Oliver Stone had grabbed the last word, along comes Richard Nixon in his own words (plus rare photos and footage). Culled from 38 hours of tape, these 1983 interviews, once intended as a ”video biography,” recap a singular life, from the man’s humble Whittier, Calif., beginnings to his White House Þnal days. Interviewer Frank Gannon is no David Frost; the Q&A on Watergate is particularly soft. Still, somehow a telling portrait emerges. Reflective, sometimes rambling, still unable to fake a smile, Nixon may skimp on the political profile — but he makes the inner man perfectly clear. B+
