The Lost Grizzlies: A Search for Survivors in the Wilderness of Colorado

Posted on

The Lost Grizzlies: A Search for Survivors in the Wilderness of Colorado Rick Bass (Houghton Mifflin, $22.95) Up until a year or two ago, the grizzly bear was presumed to be extinct in the San Juan Mountains. But recently, a small, hermetic band of these moose-size bears was found to be living in the remote higher elevations. Bass manages to transform a travelogue of his search for the grizzly into a poignant, spiritual odyssey. ”How many layers must we take off, how much of the other part of our lives must we shed, before the bears show themselves?” Bass asks. His journeys are populated by some pretty vivid characters—in particular, a blustering idealist named Doug Peacock who devotes his life to wildlife preservation. Although Bass writes from the frontier, he reminds us that in each state we need to preserve untrammeled tracts of land against which we can measure our own spirits. AJoseph Olshan
