We gave it an A

Director Jack Clayton’s take on Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw, perhaps the greatest (if most maddeningly ambiguous) ghost story ever written, makes its video debut on this letterboxed laserdisc. And about time, too, because The Innocents, with its chilling aura of repressed sexuality (embodied by the cannily typecast Deborah Kerr), is in many ways a seminal film — one of the first ’60s horrors (along with Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho and Robert Wise’s The Haunting) to really break from ’50s conventions. The print here is a little soft, but cinematographer Freddie Francis’ gorgeous black-and-white CinemaScope compositions still come across quite vividly in Fox’s transfer.
