Low-budget but visually stunning, Orson Welles’ Othello was a comeback for the graying wunderkind upon its release. (The film’s reputation later plummeted due to inferior prints at revival houses and on TV.) Criterion’s laserdisc represents the first home release of the original version; in any form, especially this immaculate print, this is one of Welles’ purest, most straight-forward masterpieces. Cool bonus: the video debut of Return to Glennascaul, a Twilight Zone-ish short Welles and his Othello co-stars shot while raising money for the feature itself. A
