Behind the Mask

Last year, dazzling special effects enthralled audiences of the Jim Carrey comedy The Mask. So, in this inside look at the movie, one might expect dazzling special effects. But they’re missing, which is why Behind the Mask is simply a clunky compilation of grainy video, scratchy sound, and film clips that begs for more explanation and is so disappointing. Even those elements that hold out promise — a sound-effects studio for re-mixing a scene, storyboards that outline an alternative ending, and an interactive screenplay with links to interviews, photos, and clips — are blandly packaged and plagued by insufferable load times. In the end, this disc never gets out from behind The Mask. C-
