A Motown tribute album to Marvin Gaye — The singer?s daughter, Nona Gaye, sings and reminisces about her father?s songs

Posted on

For Bono, Stevie Wonder, and Madonna, appearing on an upcoming Motown tribute album to Marvin Gaye was an honor. But Nona Gaye, the singer’s 20-year-old daughter, found recording ”Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)” for the disc a bittersweet experience. ”It’s amazing that the situation hasn’t improved since my father wrote that song,” says Gaye. ”I think he’d be really disappointed.” The recording also proved that Gaye has come to terms with her father’s tragic death (he was shot by his father in 1984). ”For a year or two after my father died, I didn’t listen to any of his music. I couldn’t. But then very slowly, my family and I started being able to listen — in very small doses or we’d break down,” says Gaye. ”Now when we do, it’s like he’s still here.” The album’s due out this fall.
