Video Review: 'Boca'

Posted on

With directors Walter Avancini and Sandra Werneck piling on the overheated foreshadowing, montages, and cutaways, Boca emerges as that rare artsy thriller that manages to entertain despite its pretensions as an artsy thriller. Executive producer Zalman King (The Red Shoe Diaries) can take pride in having his name on this tale of an ambitious investigative reporter (Rae Dawn Chong) in Brazil, who’s seduced by the titular crime boss (Tarcisio Meira). Fortunately, any sense of eroticism is lost every time the sleazy-looking crook reveals his mouthful of atrocious dental work, allowing the filmmakers to concentrate on Boca‘s creepy plot machinations and splendid aura of doom.
