Peeping Tom

Posted on

In Peeping Tom, Michael Powell’s notorious voyeuristic thriller, a young cinematographer (Carl Boehm) films young women while murdering them, in an attempt to capture the ultimate look of fear. The film, still strong stuff, has been made even more potent by this superb laserdisc. Film theorist Laura Mulvey provides commentary in an academic tone that will make you miss Martin Scorsese’s more enthusiastic accompaniment to previous laser editions of Powell’s work. Her observations are trenchant, but even without them, this twisted masterpiece would be a must-see.
