Return of the Seven makes its letterboxed video debut with this set, but the disc you’ll care about is The Magnificent Seven. Director John Sturges’ Westernized remake of Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai has lost none of its punch, and this scrupulously restored version (from a new, digitally enhanced negative, with the famous music struck from a master saved by composer Elmer Bernstein) lets you experience it in its original glory. No such magic has been worked on Return, the first of several indifferent sequels. Print quality is just okay, and the wide-screen format emphasizes the pedestrian nature of Burt Kennedy’s direction and the dearth of star power (Robert Fuller replacing Steve McQueen? Gimme a break). Magnificent Seven: A- Return of the Seven: B-
