We gave it an A+

Postmodern Jazz Quartet is more like it this time: Traditionally the very model of refined consistency, the MJQ goes eclectic here, thanks to guest soloists from all over the jazz map. Harry Edison, Phil Woods, Illinois Jacquet, Bobby McFerrin, Take 6, both Wynton and Branford Marsalis, and others take turns with the old masters of chamber jazz (pianist John Lewis, vibraphonist Milt Jackson, bassist Percy Heath, and drummer Connie Kay), to celebrate the group’s 39th anniversary. (Why wait till 40?) It may sound like Duets-itis, but A Celebration is no gimmick; it’s a bash. A+
