Remembering Telly Savalas

He often said that ”Telly Savalas is Kojak, and Kojak is Telly Savalas,” yet Aristotle Savalas, 70, who died of prostate cancer on Jan. 22, chewed on more than one lollipop in his life. True, it was brassy, streetwise Lieut. Theo Kojak who made the star an unlikely sex symbol through five seasons on CBS. But Savalas appeared in more than 40 films, with and without hair, including:

*Birdman of Alcatraz (1962, Columbia TriStar) He picked up a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination as Burt Lancaster’s jailhouse pal.

*The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965, FoxVideo) Shaving his head to play Pontius Pilate, he became a role model for the follicularly challenged.

*Kelly’s Heroes (1970, MGM/UA) He steals gold from the Nazis and the movie from Clint Eastwood.
