Sanctioned by an association of college coaches, this history of basketball barely acknowledges the existence of the NBA and only fleetingly refers to UCLA’s Lew Alcindor (who later changed his name to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) and North Carolina’s Michael Jordan. It Started With a Peach Basket presents some fun facts (early on, players were enclosed in a cage to keep them separated from fans; hence the word cagers) but bogs down with exhaustive commentary on things like the introduction of the court’s first lane markings.
