At the time of its release, this stylized thriller was considered one of Brando’s more curious career moves. Now finally available on video-complete with restored footage-it still seems a shaky vehicle. About a kidnapping that slowly, surely goes sour, The Night of the Following Day never decides if it’s an art film or an exercise in suspense; as a result, it’s neither. The kidnappers are so inept that they easily trip over obvious plot contrivances. They’re such superficial characters, it’s hard to care about them one way or another. This time, Brando’s magnetism just isn’t enough.
