THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERGRIS

Posted on

Call him Barney of the sea. Free Willy-starring the most popular movie whale since 1977’s Bo Derek-chomping Orca-is a kiddie sensation. Earning more than $77 million theatrically, the film has leapt to the top position on both the rentals and sales charts while still playing on 373 screens nationwide. Perhaps practice does make perfect: Willy director Simon Wincer (who found a measure of video success with his box office duds Quigley Down Under and Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man) is no stranger to movies about young boys eluding the authorities. The theme pops up in his little-seen 1985 kid’s drama D.A.R.Y.L., in which the government chases after a young adopted boy who also happens to be a robot.
