Watching a TV movie like Jack Reed: Badge of Honor (NBC, Nov. 12, 9-11 p.m.) makes you realize how thoroughly such first-rate police series as Homicide: Life on the Street, NYPD Blue, and Law & Order have made murder-mysteries like Jack Reed irrelevant. Brian Dennehy reprises his role as honest-cop Reed from last season’s miniseries Deadly Matrimony. The movie’s chief suspect is a hospital worker played by Bill Sadler (Rush, Trespass), who radiates so much villainy that he robs the story of suspense. In trying for lean realism, Reed comes off as soft and unconvincing in the midst of the best year in ages for hard-boiled police stories. C+
