In its ongoing, misbegotten attempt to attract a younger audience, PBS gives us Billy Joel: Shades of Grey (PBS, Oct. 13, 9-10 p.m.), a commercial-without- commercials for Joel’s not-bad new album, River of Dreams. The show is utterly trite in structure (performance footage intercut with interviews) and is filled with cliches from the star (”I hate to write, but I love having written”—I hear ya, Billy!). Remember this pap when PBS tries to coax fund- raising bucks out of you. C-
