THE SHOOTING PARTY

THE SHOOTING PARTY Galina Belyayeva, Oleg Yankovsky (1977, Connoisseur, subtitled, unrated, $79.95) In this Russian adaptation of a Chekov novel, the characters gathered at a decaying country estate experience various states of dissipation, from a free-spirited woman’s loveless marriage to a man’s impending death from alcoholism. The story is dense with bright dreams and dashed hopes, but this film is too affected and self-conscious to be as moving as it could be. B-
