EL MARIACHI: SPECIAL COLLECTOR'S EDITION

Posted on

EL MARIACHI: SPECIAL COLLECTOR’S EDITION Carlos Gallardo, Consuelo Gomez (1993, Columbia TriStar, wide-screen, subtitled, R, $49.95) Wanna know how Robert Rodriguez shot this bloody tale of a fugitive guitarist for $7,000? He tells all on the disc’s alternate audio track. (Another alternate track features an English-dubbed soundtrack.) Talk about cheap: Rodriguez moved the camera on a wheelchair instead of on pricey cranes or dollies. He had to simulate rapid-fire gunshots by repeating frames of a single bullet being fired (that’s all the guns could discharge). And he’s not too proud to point out umpteen continuity goofs, such as the female guard’s hair being up in one shot, down in the next. Of course, Rodriguez knows that major Hollywood players are laser buffs, and in part, he’s networking here. But so what? His resume makes great entertainment. B+
