THE DARK WIND Lou Diamond Phillips, Fred Ward (1993, LIVE, R, $92.98) What looks like a generic Phillips video actioner is actually the first fiction film directed by acclaimed documentarian Errol Morris (The Thin Blue Line, A Brief History of Time), which may account for its soporific effect. Reverently adapted from the Tony Hillerman novel, this murder mystery concerning a young Navajo cop (Phillips) who inadvertently finds himself in the middle of a dangerous drug plot is as flat as its Indian-reservation locales. Despite a few killings and smatterings of witchcraft, the film is devoid of suspense; a love interest would have helped. La Bamba- less Phillips walks through his role, narrating monotonously against barren landscapes like the host of some PBS special. D
