REBOUND FOR GLORY

Posted on

How important are first-weekend grosses? Kalifornia and Calendar Girl both bombed in their first week of release. But other current films show that slow starters can catch up: After a weak opening, The Man Without a Face gained some ground in its second week. And Hard Target, in its third week, leveled off unexpectedly after a major drop. The acclaimed action thriller now appears headed for a total domestic gross of $40 million, enough to guarantee Hong Kong director John Woo a place in Hollywood. Meanwhile, in the rest of the world, Jurassic Park has made a gargantuan $260 million in Europe and Australia-and is expected to pull in as much as $790 million worldwide eventually. Ach du raptor!
