ANNO-DRACULA Kim Newman (Carroll & Graf, $21) And you thought today’s British royals made bad marriages. The not-so-old premise of this rousing horror romp: Queen Victoria takes a centuries-old vampire with attitude, Vlad Tepes, as her Prince Consort. He keeps her on a leash (literally) while his Carpathian guards roam the capital, impaling at will. Suddenly, under the new regime, it’s chic to be ”undead,” and half of London ”turns.” (These ”new-borns” slake their thirst with pints of pig’s blood at their local pub.) Meanwhile, Jack the Ripper’s on the loose, eviscerating vampire prostitutes. The author brings 19th-century London to life with lots of campy cameos: Dr. Jekyll is here, harboring a suspicious fascination with the vampires’ ability to change form. There’s also political skulduggery and thrilling vampire-to-vampire combat. All in all, a bloody good read. B+ -EK
