We gave it a B

Camera Notes, a periodical edited by Alfred Stieglitz for most of its six-year life (1897-1903), was essentially the art world’s first nod toward photography. Christian Peterson has compiled all the issues, showing Notes to be a quirky collection of both amateurs and important artists. Stunning works like Stieglitz’s Mending Nets and William Renwick’s Nude are overwhelmed by the merely mediocre, and most of the century-old photographs don’t retain their grace in the translation to a glossy page.
