Say you were a young lawyer who needed some very private office space for a few months. What would you have to do to set yourself up in Memphis’ prestigious Cotton Exchange Building, as Tom Cruise’s character, Mitch McDeere, does in The Firm?

Look up the managing agent. The 12-story, 71-year-old building, located on the corner of Front and Union streets downtown, is actually a condo with 17 commercial tenants, six of whom own their office space.

Pay $12 per square foot. For the 300-square-foot office featured in the movie, McDeere would have to shell out $3,600 a year — easily manageable on his $96,000 salary.

Keep the doors locked. With security so important to McDeere, the office’s only flaw might be the neighbors. ”There was a law firm next door to the office we used,” laughs Michael Dellheim, The Firm‘s Memphis location manager, ”and attorneys kept coming over to volunteer as extras.
