MEAN SEASON

Posted on

Explosions. Shootings. Deaths. News from Bosnia- Herzegovina? No, just summer movie season. This year’s cool crop of hot-weather blockbusters is filled with violence-no surprise there. But in between munching our popcorn, we couldn’t help but notice that when it comes to line-’em-up and knock-’em-off victims, the 1993 rule of thumb appears to be women and children first-not to mention innocent bystanders. While squirming in our seats, we kept score of the especially brutal acts: CLIFFHANGER Crashed vehicles, Death by Shooting, Bodies plummeting from high places, Unusual Deaths, Animals in Jeopardy, Scenes in which women or children are terrorized Notes: Villain is used as a human sled. Widdy-biddy bunny comes under fire. It lives, but a stuffed animal plummets 4,000 feet, as does actress Michelle Joyner. Another woman is shot, just 1 of 10 who bite the bullet.

WHAT’S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT Scenes in which women or children are terrorized Notes: A tiny Tina is dragged by her ear; Angela Bassett is dragged by her hair. She’s also beaten, choked, and raped. Kids are terrorized by domestic violence.

JURASSIC PARK Crashed vehicles, Unusual Deaths, Animals in Jeopardy, Scenes in which women or children are terrorized Notes: Five people are torn limb from limb by dinosaurs. Young stars Joseph Mazzello and Ariana Richards are abandoned and left open to attack. Mazzello is nearly electrocuted. Five animals are eaten or mauled-a goat, a bull, a gallimimus, and two velociraptors (but they deserved it).

LAST ACTION HERO Crashed vehicles, Explosions, Death by Shooting, Bodies plummeting from high places, Unusual Deaths, Scenes in which women or children are terrorized Notes: Austin O’Brien is mugged at knifepoint in his apartment. Tiny Ryan Todd is dragged off a rooftop by an ax-wielding villain. Everything explodes.

IN THE LINE OF FIRE Death by Shooting, Bodies plummeting from high places, Unusual Deaths, Animals in Jeopardy, Scenes in which women or children are terrorized Notes: Villain breaks two women’s necks with his bare hands. A duck buys it, but an endangered German shepherd survives.
