FUGITIVE SPRING: COMING OF AGE IN THE ’50s AND ’60s Deborah Digges (Vintage, $11, 1991) The poet Deborah Digges has written a wonderful memoir of her childhood in Missouri, her adolescence (summers spent working in her father’s cancer clinic), and her marriage to an Air Force pilot. It is the story of paradise gradually lost, with glimpses of a future in which paradise is regained-or, at least, in which the loss of paradise is turned into knowledge and poetry. A-
