THE EARLY STONES: LEGENDARY PHOTOGRAPHS OF A BAND IN THE MAKING 1963-1973 Photographs by Michael Cooper, text by Terry Southern (Hyperion, $15.95) Pretty sloppy as rock coffee-table books go, but then, so was the era. Photographer Michael Cooper, who killed himself in 1973, was as much a casualty of the times as Brian Jones, and his grainy snaps convey the delirium and desperation of the Rolling Stones’ first decade. But the book’s careless layout forces some of the best shots into the gutter between pages, and reminiscences by Keith Richards, Anita Pallenberg, and Marianne Faithfull are on the hazy side. Proves they were there, though. C+ -Ty Burr
