As far as books go, summertime is traditionally fiction time. But last year Simon & Schuster broke with tradition by publishing Truman just in time for the beach bags. The biography-a huge hit-stayed on the best-seller lists the entire summer. Now Villard is clearly hoping that The Fifties, David Halberstam’s chronicle of that pivotal decade, will be this summer’s Truman. So far, so good-the book debuts at No. 5. FICTION WEEKS ON LIST
