THE 'WHEEL' WORLD

Posted on

More than a decade after Wheel of Fortune mastermind Merv Griffin first put them together, the dynamic duo of Pat Sajak and Vanna White still sits and spins atop the rankings of syndicated shows (network prime-time ratings were not available at press time due to the Memorial Day weekend). Merv’s other baby, Jeopardy!, is the only other game show currently ranked in the top 15. Meanwhile, syndication stalwart Oprah Winfrey remains queen of daytime talk, ahead of Phil Donahue (a solid second), Sally Jessy Raphael, Geraldo Rivera, and newcomer Vicki Lawrence. Over in the action arena, Star Trek: The Next Generation and its spin-off sister series, Deep Space Nine, are a potent one-two combination, and up-and- kicking is Kung Fu: The Legend Continues, perhaps boosted by the chopsocky revival spearheaded by the Bruce Lee biopic Dragon. (Kung Fu will return next season with two sci-fi companions, Time Trax and Babylon 5.) Infotainment viewers still prefer the softer stories of Entertainment Tonight to the tabloid shows Inside Edition, A Current Affair, and Hard Copy. And on the rerun scene, the Bundy clan of Married With Children outcrasses Roseanne’s Conners. Ratings* Syndicated Shows
