ALL KINDS OF LOVE Carl Reiner (Birch Lane, $18.95) Love has been known to inspire confusion, but the fogginess of this second novel from filmmaker Carl Reiner (All of Me) is its own fault. Reiner’s attempt at satirizing a dysfunctional Southern California family suffers from a predictable absurdity: Producer dad and aerobicized mom both fall for a sexy Japanese tutor; slacker son falls for sexy South American maid; sex-crazed in-laws fall for everyone; Jewish grandparents kvetch about it all. Confrontations between these randy caricatures drown the book’s more whimsical strands, leaving All Kinds teetering awkwardly between comic tearjerker and tragic farce. C -Nisid Hajari
