We gave it a B

Before she was The Judd, Wynonna sang with her mama. And what a gimmick: a mother-daughter duo hip enough to invent an irresistible amalgam of country, folk, be-bop, blues, jazz, rock, and ballads. Their early records mixed the pessimistic, hard-scrabble sound of their native Kentucky with the dreamy hopefulness of their adopted Southern California. But after they shifted to a fuller pop sound, their albums featured more catchy grooves than songs of substance, and their rural sensibility went suburban. This comprehensive three-CD set, The Judds Collection 1983-1990, is the Judds’ last hurrah — there’s nothing left to be released later, although ”I Know Where I’m Going,” a No. 1 hit from 1987, is inexplicably missing here. Advisory: Skip the third disc, which is nothing but studio-session tapes of voices and acoustic guitar. You’ve basically heard it all before — and better. B
