One could look at this four-CD set jammed with 104 (!) hits as a Yuppie Dinner Party From Hell. Do we really need another anthology with ”My Girl” and ”I Heard It Through the Grapevine”? In this case, yes, since Hitsville USA: The Motown Singles Collection 1959-1971 is the finest Motown collection on the market. The digital remixes are a mixed blessing — the Temptations’ ”Cloud Nine” sounds far too clean and stereo-separated and isn’t the beautiful muddle it used to be. More often the audio quality brings out moments you may not have noticed, like the congas in the intro to ”Reach Out I’ll Be There.” Since the box ends in 1971, none of the colossal mid-’70s hits by Stevie Wonder or Marvin Gaye are here; how about a volume two, Berry?
