We gave it a B

If Hank Jr. had difficulty finding his voice in the years before his 490-foot fall, he had no trouble once he recuperated. It was loud, proud, and politically in your face, as Williams flaunted his whoremongering and substance abuse and dared to say ”kiss my ass.” This three-CD set tracks Williams from his cheeky declaration of independence to his artistic deterioration of the last several years. Somewhere along the way, Williams lost his discipline, especially as a writer, and his hunger. It says something about how far Junior has actually come — or slipped — that the high point of the third disc in The Bocephus Box: The Hank Williams Jr. Collection 1979-1992 is the stone-country ”There’s a Tear in My Beer,” a duet through technology with Hank Sr., Junior’s biggest blessing and most lethal curse.
