We gave it a D

Ten minutes into this farce, you realize that the Zucker brothers (who executive-produced) and Naked Gun cowriter Pat Proft (who scripted) had the nerve to remake A Night at the Opera. But since a Marx Brothers movie without the Marx Brothers is a contradiction in terms, Brain Donors is an almost total failure. Proft does supply a few jokes that have a Marxian ring, but the rhythm is almost always off. Bob Nelson and Mel Smith (the ersatz Chico and Harpo, respectively) are alternately obnoxious and scary rather than anarchic and endearing, and the supporting cast overplays so broadly that there’s no difference between the comic characters and the straight men. All these flaws are magnified on video, where the cheesy sets and breathless pacing give the film the feel of a made-for-TV movie on amphetamines. D
