In You Must Be Dreaming, the eminent Chicago psychiatrist Dr. Jules Masserman allegedly drugged some of his female patients and raped them as they slept. Nöel, a successful musician, was Masserman’s patient for 18 years. Why so long? Because as a child her parents molested her and destroyed her self-esteem. You don’t have to accept that pat explanation to be impressed by Nöel’s courage. Largely through her efforts, the doctor lost his license in 1987 and was suspended, belatedly and quietly, from the American Psychiatric Association. The profession’s willingness to protect Masserman for as long as it did is the real shocker of this well-researched, briskly told nightmare. B
