Last season he lost his virginity. This season will also start off with a bang. In an early fall episode of ABC’s Doogie Howser, M.D., the young doctor (Neil Patrick Harris) will learn how to use a gun after being victimized twice.
First, Doogie is held up at gunpoint in his parents’ house. Later, someone calls to say his wallet has been found; when he goes to retrieve it, the scam artists steal his car out from under him. Eager to protect himself, Doogie goes to a shooting range to discuss the pluses of owning a gun and the need to treat guns with respect — after his dad warns him of the dangers.
Co-executive producer Vic Rauseo says the show tries to avoid the TV stereotype of gun owners: ”We didn’t want to do the typical redneck, fanatical, camouflage, over-the-edge kind of guy. We wanted to present both sides of the issue in a legitimate way.” Sex, however, won’t be totally absent from Doogie’s life. The season opener will catch him skinny-dipping in a pool with a woman who’s his mom’s boss.
